BUFFALO, N.Y. – Villa Maria College women's flag football team members
Kiara Mercado and
Angelina Green were named to the Pennsylvania Regional NCFFL All-Tournament Team after leading the Vikings to a 5-0 record this past weekend in Lancaster, Pa.
The team posted three wins on Friday, April 10 against Harford Community College, College of Staten Island and Bethany College. On Saturday, April 11, the Vikings closed out tournament play with a pair of victories over SUNY Cortland and St. Joseph's University.
The five weekend wins improved the Vikings' NCFFL record to 10-0 after collectively outscoring all oppositions by nearly 100 points, 118-19, over the two-day tournament.
The team's top offensive player was
Kiara Mercado, who helped the team through impressive rushing and receiving numbers. The senior from Peekskill scored in three of the five games after netting 109 yards rushing from seven carries for two touchdowns and 176 yards receiving from seven receptions for three touchdowns.
Mercado helped the team to a powerful 33-point opening-game win against Harford with one rush for 30 yards and a touchdown and one reception for 66 yards and a touchdown. She mirrored those results against Bethany College after a 61-yard rushing outing for one touchdown and a 55-yard receiving total for one touchdown for her second multi-score performance.
The team's top defensive player was
Angelina Green, who helped the team's defense to two shutout wins. The Vikings came close to shutouts in all five contests, but in the three games where they allowed one score each in, the opposition was only able to score on its last offensive play of the game.
Twice Green led the team in tackles and finished with 18 total for the tournament. The freshman from Hamburg also recorded two sacks, two pass breakups and a pair of interceptions over the five-game span.
