Flag Football Snaps Knights’ Seven-Game Win Streak

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's flag football team snapped SUNY Geneseo's seven-game win streak with a 26-6 non-conference road win on Tuesday, April 14 at College Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Angelina Green opened the scoring with a reception in the second quarter for a 6-0 lead.
  • The Vikings pushed their lead to 13-0 before the half after Kiara Mercado scored on a 30-yard pass play.
  • Mercado scored her second touchdown of the evening on a third-quarter reception for a 19-0 Viking lead.
  • Scarlett Melancon finished the Viking scoring with a rushing touchdown in the third quarter to improve Villa's lead to 26-0.
  • The Knights had the lone score of the fourth quarter on a passing play for the 26-6 final.
  • Brianna Shalinsky finished with three touchdown throws and 239 passing yards.
  • Mercado led all receivers with eight catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
  • The Viking defense finished with four tackles-for-loss, one sack and three interceptions.
  • Lily Runkel led the defense with nine stops while Alyssa Saavedra and Green each added eight stops apiece.
  • Of the Vikings' four tackles-for-loss total, Green finished with two and one each came from Promise Myers and Morgyn Mersdorf.
  • Mercado had a team-best two interceptions with the other coming from Kiera LeBreton.
  • It was Villa's first victory over an opponent with double-digit wins and avenged a defeat to the Knights just a week ago.
