Villa Maria Defeats Howard Community College to Clinch #1 Seed
With the #1 seed on the NCFFL(National Collegiate Flag Football League) league tournament on the line, the Villa Maria Vikings (16-9 Overall, 5-0 League) travel to Staten Island, NY where they defeated the Howard Community College Dragons 34-13.Â
After a short Dragons opening drive, the Vikings capitalized on their first play with an 18 yard
Alannah Bushorr touchdown run. The Vikings took an 8-0 lead after quarterback
Brianna Shalinsky found Bushorr in the back of the end zone for the conversion. On the second Viking possession, Shalinsky hit
Keiliany Diaz on a deep 30 yard pass play to set up first and goal. A
Lily Runkel five yard touchdown run made the score 14-0. Â
After yet another defensive stand, Shalinsky this time found
Eva Torrado on a 21 yard touchdown pass for a 20-0 lead. Â
In the second half with the Vikings driving into the wind, running back
Laila Adeyola took control of the game. Adeyola carried the ball six times for 89 yards and a touchdown, all in the second half. Â
A late Shalinsky to Diaz 18 yard touchdown would be the final Viking score of the day. Â
In addition to her strong rushing day, Adeyola also had two sacks on defense and named to the NCFFL All-Tournament team. Teammate
Lily Runkel was also named All-Tournament a she carried the ball six times for 23 yards with a touchdown and led the Vikings stellar defense. Â
The Vikings next play on Sunday, April 13
th against. St. Joseph's of Brooklyn which will be their final NCFFL regular season league game. The Vikings will then play at 12:00 p.m. Against the #4 SUNY Cortland in the NCFFL semi-finals.Â
