Villa Maria College hosted the Battle of Buffalo Showcase Tournament on March 29th at the AdPro Field House in Orchard Park, NY. The international tournament featured the 5 v 5 style of play similar to how the Olympic Games will be played in 2028.
In game one, the Vikings defeated Daemen University 34-0. Brianna Shalinsky went 3 for 4 passing for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Alannah Bushorr went 2 for 2 passing for 48 yards and two touchdowns. Keiliany Diaz had two receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
Gianna Marciano led the defense with four flag pulls, three passes defended, and two interceptions including a 25-yard pick six.
In game two the Vikings lost to Brock University Red on a dramatic touchdown with just moments remaining in the game. Shalinsky went 4/8 passing for 63 yards and a touchdown. Bushorr had two carries for twenty yards and three receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown. Bushorr also had a pick six (33 yards) on defense. Diaz also had an interception for the Vikings.
In game three, the Vikings got back on track with a 20-0 victory over Brock University Navy. Shalinsky had her most efficient game of the season, going 7 of 8 passing for 166 yards and three touchdowns. Bushorr was the recipient of all three of those touchdowns as she had three receptions for 93 yards and 3 touchdowns. Lily Runkel added one reception for twenty yards and two carries for 8 yards. Bushorr and Eva Torrado each had an interception, and Laila Adeyola had a sack in the shutout victory.
In the championship game, Villa maria fell 33-6 to Brock Red. "We didn't play our best game, that's for sure, but as a whole we did a lot of great things during the tournament," said Coach Keith Wing. "Brock University Red is one of the strongest teams in Canada and they made the plays today and we did not. We'll have to keep our heads held high and focus on the opportunities ahead of us"
The Vikings next play Geneseo on Monday, March 31st.
