Vikings Battle Pioneers To Wrap Up 2021

GLENVILLE, WV – The Villa Maria College men's basketball team were on the road on Sunday as they took on Glenville State College. It was the final game of 2021 for the team as the school prepares for winter break. After the first half, Villa were very competitive, but as the second half wore on, the team was unable to hold back the Pioneers and fell by a final score of 96-76. With the win, Glenville move to 5-4 on the year, while the Vikings fall to 7-6.
 
The Vikings had a lead for a majority of the first half. The scoring started with a Trent Cordone jump shot and a Rhalon Bragg three-pointer. From there, scores by Bragg and Cordone helped push the lead to seven points with just under 17 minutes to play. The Pioneers came back and grabbed their first lead of the game at the 9:18 mark, but a pair of free-throws by Jaiden Green helped tie the game and reclaim the lead. The two units traded leads and ties but heading into half-time the Vikings led 44-41.
 
In the first ten minutes of the second half, the two teams remained even, with the Villa deficit never getting higher then six points. The tide shifted with 9:54 to play when the opposition knocked down a three to go ahead by nine points. The Vikings tried their best to keep the deficit in single digits thanks to makes by Cordone, Jerrold Skillon and Green. Unfortunately, they were unable to get it any closer and fell by a final score of 96-76.
 
Green was the leading scorer with 16 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the field and grabbing five rebounds. Jeriah Williams recorded 14 points, collected six rebounds and three assists. Bragg and Skillon both finished with double-digits scoring, knocking down 11 and 10 points respectively.
 
The Vikings will be on winter break and open up the new year at home against Kent State Tuscarawas. The match is set for Friday, Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
