Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vikings Fall In Close Game Against Shock

BUFFALO, N.Y.—The Villa Maria College women's basketball team took on Washington Adventist University on Sunday in day two of the Bobcat Bash. The match was close through every quarter and neither team was giving an inch. Unfortunately, the Vikings were unable to walk away with the win and fell by a final score of 85-83. Villa now hold a 4-3 record, while the Shock improve to 2-2.

The Vikings went ahead by as many as eight points in the first quarter with Chmicka Kennedy and Danyea Barclay leading the way offensively, but the Shock did not let up and came back to take a 22-21 advantage after the first ten minutes of play. In the second-quarter, Barclay continued to be a fixture of the offense using her talents in the post to convert layups and her soft touch to knock down mid-range jump shots. Despite Adventist taking a nine-point lead, a late three by Cortinea Smith helped cut the deficit to 46-41 at halftime.

Villa continued to chip away, eventually tying the score at 49 thanks to a Barclay three-pointer. From then on the two units traded baskets and heading into the fourth quarter, the Shock held a 62-61 lead over the Vikings. Smith, Barclay and Adams-Edwards helped spark a 10-0 run to begin the final frame, which put the team ahead 74-62 with five minutes to play. Washington Adventist did not give up however, as they came back and tied the game at 76-76 with just over two minutes to play. Despite the late effort by Villa, including three points by Maria Falgana and an and-one opportunity by Smith, the Vikings fell by a final score of 85-83.

Barclay was the scoring leader with 47 points and recorded a double-double with ten rebounds and collected six blocks. Kennedy was all over the stat sheet, scoring ten points, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out eight assists and taking the ball away five times. Smith had a double-double of her own with 15 points and ten rebounds.

Up next for Villa is a road game against Central Pennsylvania College on Saturday, November 20 at 12 p.m.
