BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College men's basketball team played their final game of the regular season on Sunday. The Vikings hosted Southern State Community College as they celebrated senior day. The program honored their lone senior,
Trayvon Holt at half time and he proceeded to have a record setting day. Villa finished the day with a 102-69 victory to boost their record to 11-15, while the Patriots fall to 1-24.
The Vikings came out sluggish in the first half, falling behind 10-6 in the opening four minutes of play.
Gianluca Ndukanma started a run with a made free-throw and
Jaylin Rose followed with a jump shot in the paint.
Trayvon Holt gave the team their first lead of the game with a three-pointer with 14:46 to play. The run continued with buckets by
Raymond Sims and Holt that stretched the advantage to 12. Southern State stormed back to reclaim their lead with 6:50 to play, but Sims was able to get the team back on track by scoring five straight points. As the first half came to an end, Holt was able to convert two layups to give the Vikings a 42-30 lead at the break.
Holt quickly kept the momentum rolling as he knocked down a three in the opening seconds of the second frame. Villa stretched their lead to 20 points after Ndukanma finished a tough layup at the 17:23 mark. The Patriots attempted to keep the Vikings at bay, but strong play by Holt didn't let the opponent establish a rhythm. Holt's strong play included a stretch where he scored eight straight points for the team. With 6:10 to play in regulation, Sims knocked down a three-pointer to put the team up 86-55. Holt scored his final bucket with just under two minutes left and it was a three-pointer to extend the lead to 41 points, put the team over 100 points and helped him surpass 50 points.
Holt set records for post points in a game with 51, most field goal attempts with 33 and most field goal makes with 21. In addition, he shot 7-for-14 from beyond the arc and collected 15 rebounds which is a career high and amongst the top in the Villa record books. Sims also shined with 28 points and 10 rebounds and Ndukanma showed his ability down in the post with his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
