BUFFALO, NY - Dominic Douglas scored 25 points and
Jonathan Pozo took the Vikings home down the stretch as Villa Maria was able to escape with a wild 99-97 overtime victory over the Maine at Fort Kent Bengals on Saturday evening inside the Villa Athletic Center.
The Bengals and Vikings have developed quite the rivalry over the past few seasons with the team's now splitting the last six meetings. This win marked the third in a row for the Vikings and second straight decided by two points.
"Maine has really built a great program and we know that these games with them are going to be a battle every time," Villa Head Coach
Don Silveri said. "Both team's really battled and I like the way our guys kept their composure down the stretch. Pozo was huge down the stretch for us, never letting the moment get too big."
Pozo scored all 14 of his points in the second half and overtime. He scored the game-winning basket with five seconds left in overtime when he drove the length of the floor and finished in the paint while drawing a foul. After connecting on the free throw to make it a two-point game, Villa held strong defensively to seal the win.
Five players scored in double-figures for the Vikings. Sophomore
Lonnie Taylor scored 16, senior
DeJaun Owens scored 13, and junior
Daniel Thompson added 11. Sophomore
Gerald Bibbs had a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with seven points and four assists.
The Vikings have another quick turnaround as they will host Carlow University on Monday at 7 p.m.
