Villa jumps out to early lead and doesn't look back in win

BUFFALO, NY - DeJaun Owens scored 29 points and Villa Maria jumped out to an early 27-point lead as the Vikings coasted to a 99-75 victory over Carlow University on Monday night.  The win marked the third straight to open the season, all coming inside the Villa Athletic Center.

Villa was able to use early energy and execution to build an early 41-16 lead which they held onto throughout the remainder of the game.  Daniel Thompson and Gerald Bibbs each scored 12 off the bench for the Vikings while Lonnie Taylor added 10.  All 13 active players saw minutes for the Vikings and 10 scored.

Villa used a fast start to lead by double-figures within the game's first four minutes.  The lead grew steadily over the next eight minutes as the Vikings held a 27-point, 43-16 lead just over 13 minutes in.  The Vikings shot 50 percent in the first half and nearly 55 percent in the second half as they never allowed Carlow to get any closer than 13.

Villa shot 40 percent from beyond the arc and held Carlow to just 11 percent.  The Vikings had 24 assists on 39 made baskets and forced 19 turnovers, leading directly to 25 points.

Villa will now get some time off as they will travel to Delhi, New York to take part in the SUNY Delhi Classic on November 17th and 18th.  They will take on the Broncos of Delhi on the 17th at 3 p.m. in the first round.  The other game pits the Bobcats of Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse against the Apprentice School Builders.
