Owens Powers Villa Past Canton

Freshman Shaquana Owens scored 27 points and pulled down 18 rebounds.

BUFFALO, NY - Freshman Shaquana Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) scored a game-high 27 points and corralled 18 rebounds to lead the Villa Maria Lady Vikings over the SUNY Canton Kangaroos 69-51 on Saturday afternoon at the Villa Athletic Center.

Owens added two blocks and two steals as she played the entire 40 minutes.  She was 9-of-13 from the floor and connected on 6-of-8 from beyond the arc.  Her six triples were the only long range shots the Lady Vikings made all day.

Junior Jayvonna Kincannon (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) netted 17 points while senior Magan Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) scored 16 while also finishing with 9 rebounds and 6 assists.

The Lady Vikings (14-5, 6-1) held Canton (4-8) to just 26.7 percent from the floor and 23 percent from long range.  The forced 25 Kangaroo turnovers and turned those into 13 points.

Villa held the advantage after every quarter, leading 16-15 after the first 10 minutes.  The two teams traded baskets for most of the second quarter before Villa closed the half on an 8-3 run, securing a 32-25 lead at halftime.

Campbell opened the second half scoring with a pull-up jumper to stretch the lead to nine.  After Canton got the deficit down to just two, the Lady Vikings rattled off three straight baskets, beginning with a jumper by Kincannon.  Campbell followed that with a floater, before Owens banged home a triple to get the lead back up to nine.  After Canton scored on it's next possession, Owens put home another triple, getting the lead into double-figures and breaking the back of the Kangaroos in the process.

Freshman Lajanai Thomas (Kenosha, WI, Burgard) scored four points and added three steals.  Junior Tia Onipede (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) scored just two points but added nine rebounds.  Freshman Naomi Walker (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) finished with three points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Villa is back in action on Sunday as part of a three game home-stand in as many days.  They host the University of Maine Presque Isle at 2 p.m.  The Lady Vikings took down the Owls, 86-57 back on Dec. 31 in Maine.
