BUFFALO, NY - Freshman
Shaquana Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) scored a game-high 27 points and corralled 18 rebounds to lead the Villa Maria Lady Vikings over the SUNY Canton Kangaroos 69-51 on Saturday afternoon at the Villa Athletic Center.
Owens added two blocks and two steals as she played the entire 40 minutes. Â She was 9-of-13 from the floor and connected on 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Â Her six triples were the only long range shots the Lady Vikings made all day.
Junior
Jayvonna Kincannon (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) netted 17 points while senior
Magan Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) scored 16 while also finishing with 9 rebounds and 6 assists.
The Lady Vikings (14-5, 6-1) held Canton (4-8) to just 26.7 percent from the floor and 23 percent from long range. Â The forced 25 Kangaroo turnovers and turned those into 13 points.
Villa held the advantage after every quarter, leading 16-15 after the first 10 minutes. Â The two teams traded baskets for most of the second quarter before Villa closed the half on an 8-3 run, securing a 32-25 lead at halftime.
Campbell opened the second half scoring with a pull-up jumper to stretch the lead to nine. Â After Canton got the deficit down to just two, the Lady Vikings rattled off three straight baskets, beginning with a jumper by Kincannon. Â Campbell followed that with a floater, before Owens banged home a triple to get the lead back up to nine. Â After Canton scored on it's next possession, Owens put home another triple, getting the lead into double-figures and breaking the back of the Kangaroos in the process.
Freshman
Lajanai Thomas (Kenosha, WI, Burgard) scored four points and added three steals. Â Junior
Tia Onipede (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) scored just two points but added nine rebounds. Â Freshman
Naomi Walker (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) finished with three points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Villa is back in action on Sunday as part of a three game home-stand in as many days. Â They host the University of Maine Presque Isle at 2 p.m. Â The Lady Vikings took down the Owls, 86-57 back on Dec. 31 in Maine.
