BUFFALO, NY - Villa sophomore point guard
Jayson Moore (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) has been waiting to break out his shell and show off his quick and unique skill set. On Monday night, he did that, registering the program's first triple-double in a 108-95 victory over the University of Pittsburgh-Titusville at the Villa Athletic Center.
The 5-foot-7 sophomore recorded 11 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists in Monday's victory helping the Vikings get back on the winning track get get to 4-6 on the season. Moore's 14 assists were the most by any Villa player this season and with just three turnovers, he posted the best single-game assists/turnover ration in a game this season for the Vikings.
The Panthers led 56-54 at the break as the Vikings saw a 12-point lead disappear. But to start the half, the Vikings used a 10-0 run to once again gain separation from the Panthers, who entered the game averaging 109 points per game. Freshman
Donte Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Huch Tech), who made his second start of the season and second in as many games, scored the first six points of the half before junior captain
Kirby Driscoll (Angola, NY/Lakeshore) cashed in in the paint after securing an offensive rebound. Sophomore
Justin Stokes capped the run with a fast break layup after forcing a turnover nine seconds earlier. Stokes scored a team-high 26 points on 12-of-16 shooting and also stuffed the stat sheet with 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks and a steal.
Pitt worked it back to 78-76 with 10:52 left after Kiev Williams scored two of his game-high 29 points. But it was once again Villa that had an answer, this time ripping off a 17-0 run, putting the game out of reach.
Junior
Andre Diggs (Bronx, NY/Erie Community) hit two free throws to start the run before Moore also knocked down two freebies. Freshman
Jay Bergmann (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) then finished in transition before freshman big man
Darius Huggins (Buffalo, NY/Lackawanna) took his frustrations out on the rim, viciously slamming down a one-hand jam.
Diggs scored the next five for Villa steeping into a triple before also cashing in a fast break layup. The Vikings outscored Pitt 80-56 in the paint and 40-14 on the fast break. Huggins then scored again in the lane to increase the lead to 17. Driscoll capped the run with two silky smooth free throws.
Moore recorded seven assists in each half and secured eight rebounds in the second half. He played a team-high 34 minutes in a game that saw 187 shots taken. Huggins finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. Driscoll scored nine points and secured nine rebounds and also had three assists and three steals, keeping his streak going of solid games played.
Campbell finished with 18 points, making it the fourth straight game he has scored in double-figures. Freshman
Craig Page (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) got the Viking started the right way. After getting the start, Page scored 10 of the team's first 18 points.
The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday when they hit the road for the fifth time in six games to take on Houghton College at 6:00 p.m.
