Late Comeback Lifts Vikings Past Penn State York

Stokes scores season-high 20 points in overtime win

ENOLA, PA - In their first overtime game of the season, the Villa Vikings edged past Penn State York 84-77 thanks in part to a 11-4 run to close regulation.  Sophomore Justin Stokes (Buffalo, NY/Early Middle College) finished with a game, and season-high 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting.

Stokes was one of five Vikings in double figures with junior Andre Diggs (Bronx, NY/Erie Community) and freshman Donte Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Huch Tech) netting 16 points each, and freshmen Darius Huggins (Lackawana, NY/Lackawana) and Malcolm Hendrick (Buffalo, NY/Cardoza) each finishing with 10.  Huggins also added eight rebounds while Diggs and Hendrick each reeled in six.

The Vikings led 30-29 at halftime but improved shooting from Penn State helped them gain a 69-62 advantage with 2:21 left.  Stokes converted on a driving layup to begin the finishing second half run before forcing a turnover and quickly converting it into another two points.  On the next offensive possession, Hendrick cashed in two free throws.  Evan Eberhardinger scored for Penn State four seconds later on a full court pass, but it was again Stokes, who finished near the rim 10 ticks later.

After Penn State answered with another basket, this time from Derrick Hoffman, Campbell knocked down a straight on triple to tie the game at 73 with 53 seconds left.  Sophomore Jayson Moore (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) had a chance to win the game for Villa but had his driving layup blocked at the buzzer.

Campbell opened the extra session with a pull-up 18-foot jumper.  Penn State answered and tied the game at 75, seconds later but it was Moore who took his defender baseline and finished a tough contested shot off glass to give Villa the lead for good.  Stokes was good on one of two free throws on the next offensive trip and he again converted a tough shot in the paint to extend the lead to 80-75 soon after.  Campbell put the finishing touches on the win, scoring the game's final two buckets to seal the deal.

Villa found themselves down early, trailing 7-0 and 9-2 in the early stages.  They tied the game at 13 when Huggins put home a hook shot in the lane with 13:21 left in the first half.  The Vikings got their spark from junior forward Kirby Driscoll (Angola, NY/Lakeshore) who scored six points and pulled down four rebounds.  But his most ifluential play came with the game tied at 20 - when the ball seemed like a hot potato, flip-flopping between hands and the floor - it was Driscoll who got his hands dirty and dove to the ground to scoop up the loose ball and feed it to Stokes who cashed in a layup on the other end.  The junior got the entire bench fired up, resulting in a thunderous applause and high-fives from coaches and players.

Villa shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and 50 percent for the game.  They were a perfect 5-of-5 in the overtime period.  Villa outscored Penn State 28-12 in the paint.

The Vikings improve to 3-2, ending a two-game skid and will have a quick turnaround with a game slated against Central Pennsylvania College at 3 p.m. on Sunday, also in Enola, PA.
