BUFFALO, NY - Freshman
Darius Huggins (Buffalo, NY/Lackawanna) recorded his first double-double of the season, helping the Villa Vikings improve to 2-0 on the season after they defeated SUNY Delhi 77-72 on Saturday, October 31st at the Villa Athletic Center.
The final game of the Hart Hotels Tip Off Classic did not disappoint as it took a few key defensive stops by the Vikings down the stretch to secure another second half come-from-behind victory.
Huggins finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds on 7-of-8 shooting. 13 of his points came in the second half. Two of his three blocks came in the second session as well.
After trailing 38-34 at half, Delhi quickly extended their lead to seven after Zach Hall stepped into a three pointer. Villa got the game tied at 52 with 12:18 left but that was again answered by Delhi with a made jumper by Lloyd Parkmond who finished with a game-high 26 points. Trevor Smith followed that with a three to get the lead back to five with 10:50 left.
After that point, Villa held Delhi without a basket for 3:27 as they ripped off an 11-0 run to gain their largest advantage of the game, 63-57, with 7:57 left. Freshman
DeJuan Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) hit on a three to start the run.
Donte Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Huch Tech) then connected on a three of his own to take the lead. Huggins scored the next three, making one of two free throws and a layup, before
Malcolm Hendrick (Buffalo, NY/Cardoza) capped the run with a floater in the paint.
Delhi battled back to get within one, 70-69, with 1:07 left but Campbell found Huggins on the fast break who finished with a monster slam over a Delhi defender. That was the exclamation point on the Vikings' second win of the season.
Owens finished with 10 points off the bench for the Vikings. He was good on two of his three long range attempts. Campbell chipped in nine ponts off the bench. He too was 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Sophomore point guard
Jayson Moore (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), who dished out eight assists in the season opener, had seven dimes and also scored 10 points.
