Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Fourth Quarter Pushes Vikings Past Jayhawks

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team were on the road on Monday as they competed against Jamestown Community College. The game had two big swings in the opening half, but became competitive down the stretch, with neither team leading by more then four points until the final two minutes. The Vikings were able to pull away late and secure a 64-57 victory and move their record to 11-7.

The offense did not come alive immediately for the Vikings, falling behind 12-3 in the opening six minutes of the game. Layups by Danyea Barclay and Maria Falanga helped stop the run and right the ship. After the first ten minutes of action, Villa trailed 14-7. The Vikings began to get into a groove in the second quarter, cutting their deficit to one point after makes by Leah McQuiller and Falanga. The Jayhawks answered back to maintain their advantage, but Villa had the lead in their sights as they went into halftime down 23-22.

Shanughnessy Bennet tied the game at the 7:43 mark of the third quarter with a three-pointer, after the two teams traded points to start the half. Barclay gave Villa their first lead of the game with seven minutes to play, making a layup to make the score 29-28. The remainder of the quarter neither team was able to lead by more then three points and after a late free-throw by McQuiller, Villa still trailed 41-39 heading into the final frame. The back-and-forth continued in the fourth quarter, even when Villa pulled ahead by four with 6:37 to play, JCC quickly responded to reclaim their lead.

The tide truly turned with two minutes on the clock and Falanga going to the free-throw line. She knocked down her two opportunities and put Villa ahead 59-54. Seconds later, after a Jayhawks turnover, Autumn Adams-Edwards converted two free-throws of her own to extend the lead to seven. The very next possession, McQuiller stole the ball and laid in a fast break basket to put them ahead 63-54 with under a minute to play. JCC scored just one three in that stretch and Villa secured the 64-57 win.

Falanga was the leading scorer with 15 points and added five assists, six rebounds and four steals. Barclay impressed too, securing a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also swatted away seven balls, stole the ball three times and handed out three assists. Adams-Edwards scored her 11 points in the fourth quarter and McQuiller was another double-digit scorer with ten points.

Up next for Villa is a long road stretch in the tri-state area, starting on Friday, February 4 against Monroe College-Bronx. The game is slated for a 6:30 pm start time.
