Women’s Basketball Split Pair of Games Over The Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TRI-STATE AREA – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team traveled down to the tri-state area to play four games in four days. The first game of that four-game set was cancelled, so the Vikings looked ahead to Saturday, where they battled and defeated Raritan Valley Community College. On Sunday, Villa played three close quarters against Monroe College before falling behind in the fourth quarter. The road trip ends on Monday, when they head to Five Towns College.

In their matchup against Raritan Valley, two teams were close in the first two quarters, going into the half with a 22-21 advantage to the Lions. The game shifted at the 7:14 mark of the third quarter after Leah McQuiller knocked down a three to give Villa a 27-26 lead. It kicked off a run that gave them a strong hold on the game. The scoring kept going with Danyea Barclay hitting a layup and Maria Falanga converting a three-pointer. A couple of minutes later, Falanga stole the ball and made a fast break layup to bring the lead to double-digits. Now heading into the fourth quarter, Villa led 44-30. The team fended off the lions and held on for a 62-54 win.

Barclay was incredible with 24 points, 13 rebounds, 10 blocks, five steals and four assists. McQuiller was the other Vikings with double digit scoring, contributing 12 points, five rebounds and six steals.

On Sunday, the Vikings were in New Rochelle, NY to take on Monroe College. The game was tight in the first quarter, with Villa squeaking out a 19-18 lead after the initial ten minutes. In the second quarter, the Vikings began to pull ahead, outscoring the Mustangs 18-10 and leading 37-28 at halftime. Villa kept their foot on the pedal in the third quarter, once again outscoring the opposition, 16-13, and leading 53-41 heading into the final frame. However, the Mustangs did not quit and they mounted their comeback by scoring 33 points in the fourth quarter and hitting two free-throws in the final seconds to defeat the Vikings, 74-72.

Barclay continued to play well, scoring 26 points and collected six rebounds while swatting away four shots. McQuiller hit four threes as she total 18 points and nine rebounds. Jordon Wright also finished with double digit scoring, recording 11 points to go along with two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Vikings will remain in the tri-state area as they head to Long Island for their battle with Five Towns College on Monday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m.
