Vikings Compete In Another Overtime Game

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College men's basketball team went into another overtime game on Wednesday as they hosted Bryant and Stratton-Syracuse. After a back-and-forth battle in regulation, the two teams headed into overtime tied, 77-77. The Bobcats then outscored the Vikings 13-10 in the overtime period and won by a final score of 90-87.

Nolan Shephard kicked off the scoring with a layup in the opening minute and then added a free throw 30 seconds later. The two teams were constantly trading buckets, with Kevin Goode leading the way with four made threes in the opening frame. The largest deficit for Villa came at the 3:34 mark when they trailed by five, but Bersy Moundzieho made a layup to stop the run, and Goode knocked down one of his threes to tie the game at 29. After 20 minutes of play the two teams were even, 34-34.

The second half was a similar story to the first, with neither team pulling away. Multiple Vikings helped keep the game close in the first ten minutes of the second frame. Master Radford was knocking down mid-range jump shots and dunks, while Jaylin Rose and Trent Cordone added layups. Villa fell behind by nine points at the 11:09 mark, but the three-ball began to drop starting with Tim Payne who made back-to-back shots from beyond the arc. Goode knocked down another three and then after a Shephard layup, Goode converted another three to cut the deficit to just one point. Towards the end of the half, Payne hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 77-77 and the two teams went into overtime.

Payne kicked off the overtime period with a three and later added a layup to put the team ahead. The Bobcats began to pull away and the Vikings were unable to fight back and take the lead. When the final horn sounded, Villa fell by a final score of 90-87.

Goode finished the game with 27 points and shooting 8-for-13 from three. He finished with a double-double after collecting 11 assists. Shephard and Radford both added double-doubles of their own. Shephard scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Radford scored 10 points, collected 10 rebounds and swatted away five shots. Payne was impactful off the bench, scoring 18 points in 24 minutes of play.
