Vikings Impress At Home With Win Over Falcons

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team put on a dominant performance at home on Saturday, defeating Fisher College by a final score of 72-49. They once again showed their versatility with four players scoring 12 points or more and all seven players that saw the court grabbed four or more rebounds. The win puts the Vikings at 7-4 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 3-5.

The first quarter was competitive as the Vikings couldn't pull ahead by more than six points. Autumn Adams-Edwards scored first for Villa with a layup and then Maria Falanga reclaimed the lead with a three-pointer. After a pair of free-throws by Taliah Bush, Danyea Barclay pushed the lead to 12-6 with a three of her own. The Falcons continued to answer back and kept their deficit to just five after the first ten minutes of action.

The tide began to turn in the second quarter when the Vikings went on a 22-1 run starting at the 7:18 mark with a Falanga three to make the score 27-24. The Falcons scored their one point with five minutes to play and then the Vikings began to convert on offense. Leah McQuiller knocked down two free-throws and a Cortinea Smith layup brought the lead to double-digits. Smith and Chmicka Kennedy converted seven straight free-throws and Bush capped off the run with a jump shot to bring the Villa lead to 21. Fisher made two free-throws at the end of the quarter and were down 46-27 going into half-time.

In the third quarter, Villa locked down on defense limiting the Falcons to just nine points on 4-for-16 shooting from the field and 0-for-5 from three. Falanga scored eight of her points in the third frame, shooting 3-for-5 from the field and 2-for-3 from the three. Villa let off the gas in the fourth quarter, but still came away with a comfortable 72-49 win over Fisher College.

Falanga was the leading scorer with 17 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field and 3-for-6 from three. She also grabbed four rebounds and had two assists. Smith continues her impressive stretch of games, scoring 15 points, collecting five rebounds and two steals. Kennedy was strong in her 24 minutes off the bench, scoring 13 points, 5-for-6 from the free throw line, and was the leading rebounder with nine and leader in steals with four.

Villa will hit the road on Wednesday, December 8 when they travel to Finger Lakes Community College for a 5 p.m. matchup.
