AUBURN, ME – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team continued their season opening road trip on Saturday with a game against Central Maine Community College. Despite a close game at half time, the Vikings were unable to gain the upper hand and were handed a 67-52 loss. Villa now sit at 1-1 on the year, while the Mustangs start their year 1-0.
Maria Falgana got the scoring started with an opening three pointer, but the next set of points didn't come until the 4:27 mark when
Danyea Barclay knocked down a pair of free-throws.
Leah McQuiller followed that up with a three-pointer to give the team the lead. That advantage grew with a
Chmicka Kennedy free-throw and a three by
Cortinea Smith. The Mustangs made their comeback and cut the score to 12-10 in favor of Villa after one quarter.
The second frame saw the Mustangs open up their advantage to as many as six points with 3:19 to play. Villa then mounted a comeback of their own starting with a jump-shot by Barclay. McQuiller knocked down a free-throw and Barclay converted a three-point play to even up the score at 22 apiece as the two units went into half-time.
The second-half of the game saw Villa struggle offensively, as they were outscored 22-15 in the third quarter and 23-15 in the fourth quarter. Barclay finished the day with 20 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks in 40 full minutes of action. McQuiller was the second leading scorer recording 11 points and gathering six rebounds.
