BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College men and women's basketball team saw the regular season end just over a week ago, but it does not mean the year is over. The Vikings will host Bryant and Stratton-Buffalo on Saturday, Feb. 29 for a women's game at 1 p.m. and men's game at 3 p.m.
Vikings This Season: The women's team have impressed this year, working their way to an 18-4 record and being ranked no. 3 in the latest United State Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Coaches Poll. They had a mark of 11-1 at home and 7-3 on the road. On the men's side, Villa finished the year 11-15 and cracked the top-15 a couple of times early in the season.
Last Time Out: Trayvon Holt helped the men's team end the regular season on a high note as he scored 51 points in a 102-69 victory over Southern State. The women's side were also able to close out the year with a win as they traveled to Bryant and Stratton-Syracuse and defeated the Bobcats, 89-79.
Vikings vs. Bobcats Pt. 3: For the men's basketball team this will be the third installment of this matchup and the two previous games have been wire-to-wire games. In the first matchup, Villa lost in overtime 88-85, and in the second battle they fell in the final seconds, 84-82. The Bobcats have three players averaging double-digit scoring and are currently ranked no. 6 in the USCAA Division I rankings.
Vikings vs. Bobcats Pt. 4: On the women's side, these two teams
have
faced three times this season and the Vikings are 1-2. The first matchup was an exhilarating matchup that went down to the wire, the Villa was won the wrong side of an 80-78 final. Just three days later, the Vikings got their revenge when they dominated the Bobcats, defeating them 73-56. The third matchup occurred after the new year, and the opposition was impressive as they defeated Villa, 70-47. In the latest USCAA poll, the Bobcats are ranked no. 5 in Division I.
Looking Ahead: The United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) will be announcing tournament bids for the 2020 men's and women's basketball National Championship through official videos. On Friday, Feb. 28 the Division II teams will be announced starting with the men's side at 12 p.m. followed by the women's at 12:30 p.m.
