NEW KENSINGTON, PA – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team were on the road on Saturday as the battled Penn State-New Kensington. The Vikings jumped out to an early lead and dominated from beginning to end, walking away with an 80-48 lead. Villa now holds a record of 16-2, while New Kensington fall to 2-17 on the year.
The first lead of the day for Villa came at the 8:48 mark when
Bianca Brown converted a pair of free-throws. From there the advantage began to grow starting with a
Dakaylah Winfield layup and then and three-pointer from Brown. After a solid first quarter, the Vikings led 13-7. As the second quarter kicked off,
Estella Anderson made a layup and it was followed up by a Winfield three to extend the lead to double-digits.
Tekia Gary joined the scoring party with a layup and a couple of minutes later the advantage was pushed to 15 points after another Winfield three. Heading into half-time, Villa had a 35-17 lead.
The scoring continued as the second half got into gear.
Norvonee Hall made a layup to start and after an Anderson free-throw, Gary hit a shot from beyond the arc to put the team ahead by 20-points. The lead continued to grow as the quarter progressed with Anderson hitting back-to-back layups, followed by a layup by
Precious Adamson and a three-pointer by Brown. New Kensington made a run of their own and cut the deficit to under 20-points, but Villa pushed to lead to 59-37 after three-quarters of play. The final frame of the game was impressive for Winfield as she shot 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from behind the arc as she scored 13 points. When the final horn sounded, Villa were winners 80-48.
Five Vikings finished with double-digit scoring, and Winfield led the way with 23 points and added five rebounds, five assists and five steals. Brown scored 13 points and dishing out four assists. Gary contributed 12 points, while grabbing four steals. Hall recorded a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.
Villa returns home on Monday, Feb. 3 as they will host Jamestown Community College. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
