Vikings Race Past Jayhawks For Win No. 17

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team solidified their 17th win of the season on Monday, as they defeated Jamestown Community College 81-49. The Vikings outscored the opposition in every quarter as they increased their record to 17-2, while the Jayhawks fall to 8-11 on the season.

Villa fell behind 6-3 in the opening three minutes of play, but it quickly turned around when Estella Anderson made a layup to cut the deficit to one and Norvonee Hall gave the team the lead with a mid-range jump shot. The run continued as Anderson added back-to-back layups and a minute later Bianca Brown added a layup of her own to push the advantage to double-digits for the first time. Neither team scored in the final 1:30 of the first quarter, so the Vikings led 17-7 heading into the second.

As the second frame kicked off, Villa began to build on their lead starting with layups by Hall and Brown. After a stretch of scoreless play, Ta Lia Burgess hit a three-pointer before Dakaylah Winfield added a jumper to stretch the advantage to 16. Tekia Gary and Precious Adamson each scored a layup to hit an 18-point lead before Burgess later pushed it to 19 with another three. As the half-time horn sounded, Villa walked into the locker room ahead 35-18.

Heading into the third quarter, the Vikings got the lead to 21 on a fast break layup. The lead reached a high of 24 times on multiple occasions thanks to scores by Burgess and Winfield. In addition, the Jayhawks could not establish a consistent offense and their deficit only got as low as 17. As the final frame moved along, Brown, Anderson and Burgess contributed buckets both in the post and behind the arc. In the final second, Brown knocked down a corner three-pointer to cap off the victory, 81-49.

Brown led the way with 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field and 3-for-6 from three, while also collecting six rebounds. Burgess was effective off of the bench, adding 16 points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Vikings hit the road on Sunday, Feb. 9 as they take on Bryant and Stratton-Rochester for a 1 p.m. battle.
