DIX HILLS, N,Y, -- The Villa Maria College men's basketball team battled Five Towns College on Sunday in an entertaining matchup. After an impressive first half, the Vikings held off a comeback by the opposition to win 91-80. With the victory Villa moves to 8-12 on the year, while the Sound fall to 7-9 on the season.
The Vikings scored back-to-back buckets to kick off the game with
Raymond Sims and
Trayvon Holt each hitting a layup. The two teams traded points in the following minutes, before Villa began to make their run. Sims began to extend their advantage with a three-pointer and then Holt dunked the ball to push the lead to six. In under a minute later,
Jaylin Rose nailed a shot from beyond the arc put the team in front 23-14. After a made free-throw by the opposition the points continued for the Vikings with five straight points by
Jaelyn Hall. With 8:45 on the clock, Holt knocked down a three to push them ahead of the Sound 30-15. Five Towns attempted to get back into the game, but made shots by
Victor Fuller, Sims and Holt kept the opposition at bay and keep the lead at double-digits. After pushing the advantage to 18, Villa went into halftime with a 53-35 score.
The Sound mounted a comeback to start the second half as they cut their deficit to 10 at the 17:19 mark. A couple of minutes later the Vikings lead shrunk to single digits and with 10:48 to play, the score was tied at 65-65.
Gianluca Ndukanma reclaimed the lead for the team with a layup and then Sims helped out with another three-point make. The Sound once again got with-in one, but the Vikings began to make their push with three minutes on the clock.
Dorion Ivey scored back-to-back layups to push the lead to five. Holt followed with a layup of his own before
Jordan Heine converted a pair of free-throws to put the team up nine with just over a minute to play. As the final horn sounded, the Vikings took home a 91-80 victory.
Holt impressed with a 25 point, 14 rebound double-double, while also contributed four assists and three steals. Fuller added 23 points and collected six rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Sims scored 21 points of his own and grabbed seven rebounds, while dishing out five assists.
Villa will return home on Saturday, Feb. 1 as they host Berkley College at 1 p.m.
