BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team competed at home on Saturday as they hosted Bryant and Stratton-Albany. The Vikings continued their strong play as they defeated the Bobcats, 83-47 for the teams eighth straight victory. With the win, Villa now sits at 13-1, while Bryant and Stratton fall to 3-11 on the year.
Dakaylah Winfield gave the team their first lead at the 8:18 mark with a three-pointer to go ahead 7-4. The Bobcats worked their way back to a 13-9 lead, but Villa answered with a three by
Ta Lia Burgess and layup by
Bianca Brown to push the momentum back their way. Four different Vikings scored to end the first quarter as they jumped ahead 23-15 going into the second frame.
Precious Adamson gave the team their first double-digit lead at the 7:33 mark with a layup off of a
Norvonee Hall assist. As the second quarter progressed so did the Vikings advantage.
Estella Anderson converted a free-throw to push the lead to 15 and later Burgess knocked down a three-pointer to put the team up 42-22 with 3:46 to play. The largest lead of the first half occurred after a Hall layup pushed the score to 50-24. As the contest went into halftime, Villa led 50-28.
The two teams began trading buckets as they entered the third quarter, but at the 5:49 mark the Vikings began to make another push. It started with an Anderson bucket in the post, which put the team up 58-36. A couple of minutes later, Burgess and
Jordon Wright hit three-pointers to extend the lead to 27. With just under one minute to play in the third frame, Wright and Hall converted layups to push Villa ahead 70-39 going into the final quarter of regulation.
The Viking advantage never fell below 28 as they were in full control of the game as the clock expired. Every player scored for Villa, but they were led by Burgess, who finished with 18 points on 5-for-11 shooting from behind the arc to go along with eight rebounds. Hall was a machine on the boards, grabbing 16 rebounds and scoring 16 points.
Villa will head on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 14 as they head to Bryant and Stratton-Buffalo for their third game against the Bobcats at 5 p.m.
