MONACA, PA – The Villa Maria College men's basketball team competed in the first day of a two-day holiday tournament hosted by Penn State-Beaver. The Vikings battled the Community College of Beaver County and came up short as they lost 90-63. The result pushes the Villa record to 4-6, while the Titans now move to 10-1 on the season.
The Vikings got off to a slow start, falling behind 12-2 at the 14:39 mark of the first half.
Juwan Beale knocked down a three to stop the run and then
Jeru Molson converted two free-throws to cut the deficit to seven. A few moments later,
Trayvon Holt made a layup to bring the score to 14-9. After the Titans pushed their lead back to double-digits, but Beale once again stopped the run with five straight point's to put Villa behind 19-14. Despite the strong effort offensively to comeback, the Titans continued to push back and after the first 20 minutes of play, they were ahead 42-24.
Villa tried their hardest to mount a comeback in the second half, but fell short on the defensive end. Holt was affective in the second frame, scoring eight points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field. Beale,
Raymond Sims and
Jordan Heine all recorded seven points and combined to shoot 8-for-12 from the field. However, it was not enough as the Vikings lost to the Titans by a score of 90-63.
Overall, Beal has a strong performance with 19 points and five rebounds in 32 minutes of play. Holt tallied 12 points and six rebounds.
The Vikings will battle Penn-State Beaver on Saturday, Dec. 21 in day two of the Beaver Holiday Tournament. The game is set for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
