JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- The Villa Maria women's basketball team competed in their first of three games in three days on Monday and came away with a 68-60 win. The Vikings hit double-digit victories and now hold a 10-1 record, while Jamestown Community College drop to 4-7 on the season.
Villa came out of the gate a little slow, falling behind 16-8 with 2:43 to play in the first quarter.
Dakaylah Winfield helped cut that deficit as the first frame came to an end after she hit a three-pointer and a layup to put the Vikings down 19-15. The second quarter was a completely different story as the team outscored the Jayhawks 21-11. Winfield kicked it off with another three, putting Villa behind by just one. At the 5:42 mark,
Jordon Wright nailed a three of her own to put the team up one. Winfield led an 8-0 run to end the frame as she sunk two more shots from behind the arc. At the half, Villa led 36-30.
After a Jayhawk run to start the third quarter,
Ta Lia Burgess kick started the offense with a three-point make. After layups by
Estella Anderson and
Taliah Bush, the Vikings carved out a 43-34 advantage. The lead jumped to double digits at the 3:19 mark after
Tekia Gary converted a fast break layup off of her steal. The largest lead came as the third frame came to an end and Bush hit her second free-throw. Villa led 53-41 as the fourth quarter started.
Winfield and
Bianca Brown continued to hit shots from behind the arc and after hitting back-to-back at the eight-minute arc, they put the team up 12. Despite going up 15 with 5:53 to play, the Vikings were met with a persistent Jayhawks team. The home team mounted a 9-0 run to cut their deficit to just six with four minutes on the clock. However, both teams went scoreless for the next two-minutes until Bush knocked down a free-throw. Villa buckled down defensively and held the Jayhawks to just two points in the final four minutes of play and walked away with a 68-60 victory.
Winfield was on a mission as she scored a season high 29 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the field and 6-for-7 from three. She also recorded four assists, three rebounds and six steals. Anderson was impressive on the boards as she grabbed 10 rebounds in her 24 minutes of action. As a team, the Vikings had 17 steals and scored 23 points off of forced turnovers.
Villa will travel to Bryant and Stratton-Albany on Tuesday, Dec. 17 as they take on the Bobcats at 7 p.m. for their second game of a three-game stretch.
