Men’s Basketball Stumbles In Home Game

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria Viking men's basketball team lost at home on Saturday against Penn State Greater Allegheny. The matchup was close and competitive, but Villa couldn't do enough and dropped the game 86-81. With the loss, the Vikings hold a record of 2-3, while the Lions remain undefeated at 4-0. 
 
The two teams traded buckets for the first four minutes, before Dorion Ivey gave the team a lead with a made three-pointer. After the 15 minutes mark, neither team held more than a four-point advantage. Key shots were hit by Juwan Beale, Daniel Thompson and Derick Simpson helped stop runs and give Villa the lead. After a late three by the opposition, the Vikings were down 45-42 at halftime. Beale was efficient in his first 14 minutes of play, scoring 10 points on 3-for-5 shooting. 
 
Trayvon Holt gave the team a 49-45 lead after hitting a three pointer at the 17:56 mark. The Vikings maintained the lead until the eight-minute mark, thanks to seven straight points by Raymond Sims. The Vikings continued to cut into the deficit, with Simpson hitting back-to-back layups to trim the Lions advantage to just five points. Unfortunately, a couple of threes wouldn't fall and the team lost by a score of 86-81. 
 
 Beale and Simpson each contributed 16 points, while also combining for 14 rebounds. Holt finished the night with 11 points, four assists and two steals. Thompson and Sims, each played key minutes off the bench and combined for 18 points and nine rebounds. 
 
The Vikings will hit the road on Saturday, Nov. 23 when they battle against Bryant and Stratton – Syracuse at 4 p.m.
