BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College men's basketball team had a rematch against Bryant and Stratton Albany on Saturday, as they played their first game at home. The results were not in the teams favor as they fell by a score of 67-63. The loss pushed the Vikings record to 1-2 on the year, while the Bobcats move to 2-1 in the young season.
Villa got off to a strong start after made layups by
Derick Simpson,
Juwan Beale,
Trayvon Holt and
Jeru Molson gave the team an early 10-2 advantage. The Bobcats did not go away as they fought their way backs to even the score at 12-12 at the 8:48 mark. Timely buckets by Holt and Simpson kept the Vikings ahead for most of the half but a three-point play by the opposition had Villa down 27-24 at halftime.
Early in the second frame, back-to-back makes by Holt helped the team even the game again at 31-31 before a Simpson layup put them ahead. From that point forward, both units tied the score up five separate times, while trading leads even more.
Daniel Thompson tried his hardest to bring the team back, drawing a foul and then hitting three consecutive free-throws to cut the deficit to two at the 13 second mark. However, Villa could not complete the comeback and fell by a final score of 67-63.
Holt led the way in scoring, collecting 19 points and bringing in five rebounds. Beale and Simpson each had ten points and combined for 11 rebounds and a pair of blocks.
The games continue on Monday, Nov. 11 when the Vikings travel to Carlow University for a 7 p.m. road battle.
