BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College men's basketball team is ready to take on the 2019-2020 campaign with a unit that is filled with new faces including a fresh coaching staff and plenty of new student-athletes ready to represent the blue and green.
The Vikings will be led by head coach,
Desmond Randall, who is coming over from West Seneca High School where he had a 24-1 season.
Demario Rhodes will be the assistant coach, while also being the director of scouting and head coach of the junior varsity basketball program at Villa.
As for the student-athletes on the court,
Trayvon Holt ad
Daniel Thompson are two key returners that are expected to contribute big minutes. Holt will be depended on as a starter and a leader, while Thompson is one of the best scorers and can add instant offense.
Freshmen
Victor Fuller,
Dorion Ivey and
Naim Bradley are expected to have an impact this year, as they all have high ceilings and diverse skill sets.
Gianluca Ndukanma was a late addition to the team, but the coaching staff believes he has a bright future. Sophomores
Derick Simpson,
Jaylin Rose and
Jeru Molson give coach Randall options at the guard position, while
Juwan Beale,
Raymond Sims and
Madut Ayiy add height and important post play.
Despite a lot of new faces, the coaching staff is aiming high.
"The main goal is to make the national tournament and win it all," stated coach Randall, "last year the Vikings made it to the final four and I want to take it even further."
The season kicks off on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they take on Bryant and Stratton – Albany at the Paul Smith's Tournament. The first home game for Villa will be on Sunday, Nov. 10 as they will host Bryant and Stratton at 12 p.m.
