Marafino Leads Vikings To First Win Of The Season

DIX HILLS, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's soccer team secured their first win of the 2019 campaign after defeating Five Towns College 6-3. Megan Marafino was the all-star for the Vikings, scoring five goals and assisting the sixth. The win shifts their record to 1-3, while the Sound fall to 0-4.

The game got off to back-and-forth start, with neither team giving up the lead and keeping the score at 0-0 through the first 15 minutes. Marafino scored the first goal of the season for the Vikings at the 15:15 mark to give the team a 1-0 lead. Despite the Sound tying the score, Izasia Smith brought the lead back to Villa at 44:07 off of the pass by Marafino.

The second half got off to a fast start with Marafino knocking in two goals to push the advantage to 4-1. After the second Five Towns College goal, the game settled down and neither team allowed a goal until the 85:50 mark, when Marafino knocked in her fourth goal of the game. A few minutes later, she put her fifth goal in the back of the net to secure the win.

Marafino tallied 11 shots, six of which were on goal. Bianca Brown also created chances during the game, taking three shots, two on goal. Goalkeeper, Jordan Wright, was tough during the game making 12 saves.

"The win happened because of each and every player on the team," stated Marafino, "everyone put forth their best effort and we came out with the win because of it."

Villa remains on the road as they battle Bryant and Stratton – Albany on Sunday, Oct. 5 with the match set to begin at 1 p.m.
