BUFFALO, NY - In a battle of the nation's top-two teams, the #1 Villa Maria Vikings dropped a hard-fought game, 94-82 to #2 Berkeley College on Saturday afternoon inside the Villa Athletic Center. Villa freshman
Lonnie Taylor led all scorers with 30 points as Villa went toe-to-toe with the three time defending United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Champions.
After trailing by seven at halftime, Villa (18-4) got within one-point, 55-54 lead with 13:13 left. Berkeley (16-1) responded and pushed the lead back to seven, but the Vikings answered, grabbing a one-point, 66-65 lead with 9:12 left. But Berkeley again re-gained the lead and was able to hold off the Vikings down the stretch.
Taylor was 15-20 from the floor for Villa and added 10 rebounds. Juniors
Dominic Douglas and
DeJaun Owens each scored 11 points while
Jay Scarbrough added 10 off the bench. Michael Taylor led Berkeley with 25 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Villa is back in action on Monday at 8 p.m. against #20 Penn State Fayette at home.
