Villa pulls away from College of St, Joseph in second half

BUFFALO, NY - Dominic Douglas scored 33 points and the Vikings shot 56 percent in the second half as Villa Maria picked up a 102-87 victory over the College of St. Joseph Fighting Saints on Saturday afternoon inside the Villa Athletic Center.

The Vikings and Saints went toe-to-toe for the first 20 minutes before Villa opened up a double-digit lead midway through the second half.  Douglas scored 17 of his 33 in the second half and was 6-of-10 from the field, and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.  Villa improves to 17-3 and 5-0 in Northeastern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (NIAC) play.

Villa entered the game ranked second in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II National Coaches Poll while CSJ is a member of the USCAA Division I and is transitioning to also be a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), a scholarship-based organization.

Douglas also added nine rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.  Junior DeJaun Owens scored 14 points and with his second field goal of the game, surpassed 1,000 career points, becoming the first male athlete in Villa history to do so.  He hit three triples and was 5-of-10 from the field.

Sophomore Daniel Thompson came off the bench to score 13 points while freshman Lonnie Taylor and junior Jonathan Pozo scored 12 and 10 points respectively.  Taylor secured a team-high 11 rebounds while Pozo dished out six assists.

The Vikings have now won three straight and will next play a road contest on Tuesday against #19 Penn State Du Bois.  Tip is set for 7 p.m.
