DEPEW, NY - The Villa Maria College Vikings men's soccer program competed in the program's first ever game on Sunday afternoon as sophomore goalkeeper
Dominic Douglas (Bainbridge, GA/Bainbridge) shined despite defeat.
The Vikings dropped their opening game of the season and program, 8-0 to Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon at Rehm Road Park in Depew. Â Douglas made 18 saves as he continued to keep the inexperienced Vikings alive and competing. Â Douglas stopped one penalty kick on top of multiple diving and sliding plays and influenced the game in multiple ways in the defensive zone.
"Dominic's play was obviously outstanding and I'm very proud of him," Vikings head coach
Mike Ertel said. Â "Obviously we are disappointed with a loss to open our season but I'm pleased with the effort our guys showed throughout the entire 90 minutes and it's something we can build on."
Douglas stopped a penalty kick midway through the first half on Penn State's Creasy Lopez, making a great diving save to keep the ball out of the net. He also forced three balls off the post, continuing his great play of angles and making it difficult on the Harrisburg attackers.
Villa sophomore
Doug Martin (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) led the team with two shots on goal. Â
The Vikings are back in action on Saturday September 10 when they host SUNY-Delhi at 4 p.m.
