BUFFALO, NY - Sophomores DeJaun Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) and
Dominic Douglas (Bainbridge, GA/Bainbridge) each scored 17 points but it was not enough as the Villa Maria College Vikings dropped an 88-81 contest to Erie Community College on Saturday afternoon.
Owens knocked down five triples and Douglas needed just seven shot attempts to net the team high in points. It marked the fifth time this season that Owens has made at least three triples and the fifth game in-a-row that Douglas has notched double-figure scoring numbers. Despite the offensive output from the pair of sophomores, Erie was able to shoot 53.8 percent from the floor and out-rebound the Vikings 50-26.
Villa (3-6) trailed by as many as 16 points with 5:07 left before an 8-0 run and some key defensive stops got the Vikings within five points with 58.9 seconds left. But that was the closest Villa could get as the second half comeback fell short. Bri'an Brown led the Kats (6-1) with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Villa freshman
Gerald Bibbs (Buffalo, NY/Oracle) scored 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and also had three blocks.
The Vikings are next action on Wednesday, November 30th when they host Houghton College at 8 p.m. Follow the Vikings on Twitter for all updates on the team and program (@VillaVikings).
