ALBANY, NY - The Villa Maria College Lady Vikings rolled to their third straight victory, defeating Mount Holyoke College 80-52 on Sunday afternoon, capturing the 2016 Panther Tip-Off Tournament Championship hosted by Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the process.
Sophomore forward
Shaquana Owens scored a season-high 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting as the Lady Vikings shot 47 percent from the floor. Â They held Mount Holyoke to just 24 percent shooting.
Villa (3-4) jumped on the Lyons early, outscoring them 24-8 after the first quarter. Â The Lady Vikings took a 40-14 lead into halftime and didn't need much more. Â After being outscored 22-15 in the third quarter, Villa finished strong, winning the final quarter 25-16.
Owens connected on three triples and also added five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Â Freshman
Nina Cray (Wheatland, IA/Calamus-Wheatland) scored a season-high 14 points and corralled a game-high 13 rebounds for her first double-double. Â Both Owens and Cray were named to the All-Tournament Team while senior
Jayvonna Kincannon (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) also added 14 points, a day after scoring 30 in a win over Alfred State College, and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Â
Freshman
Brooklyn Jenkins (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and senior
Clarissa Walker (Rochester, NY/Genesee) each chipped in six points apiece. Villa scored 46 points in the paint and also turned 27 Lyons turnovers into 34 points.
The Lady Vikings are off until next Saturday, November 26th when they take part in the Thunderwolves Classic, hosted by Niagara County Community College. Â Villa plays Community College of Baltimore County-Dundalk at 5:30 pm in the first round.
