Hot Start Powers Villa Past York

Vikings top century mark as Waters scores 27 off the bench

BUFFALO, NY - Four players scored in double-figures as the Villa Maria Vikings used a 18-6 run to open the game and defeat York College (NY) 101-76 on Friday evening in the opening round of the Cole's Classic hosted by Buffalo State College at Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Freshman Eric Waters (Buffalo, NY/Oracle) scored a season-high 27 points off the bench in just 20 minutes to lead Villa (3-3).  He hit 11 of his 12 shots and added five rebounds, two steals and a block.  Fellow freshman and former high school teammate Gerald Bibbs (Buffalo, NY/Oracle) also scored a season-high 21 points and came away with nine rebounds in 26 minutes of work.  The freshman duo combined to go 18-of-23 from the field

Bibbs scored seven of Villa's first 10 points to give the Vikings a 10-4 edge just 4:21 into the game.  After sophomore Dominic Douglas (Bainbridge, GA/Bainbridge) converted on a layup inside, Bibbs connected on a triple from the left corner, followed by another three-ball from sophomore guard DeJaun Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) to extend the lead to 12 early.

The Cardinals (0-2) got within seven points but the Vikings stretched the lead to as many as 20 in the first half thanks to 60 percent shooting.  Villa shot 59.7 percent for the game, it's highest shooting percentage of the season.  They were 5-of-11 from beyond the arc as Owens - who finished with 14 points - knocked down three while Bibbs and freshman Damone Jackson (Buffalo, NY/Lackawanna) each put home a three ball of their own.  Douglas finished with 11 points, making him the fourth Viking to hit double-figure scoring numbers.

The Vikings led by as many as 29 in the second half as the outcome was never in doubt.  12 different players scored for Villa.  Senior Andre Diggs (Bronx, NY/Erie Community) came off the bench to score eight points, knocking down three consecutive jumpers in the first half to keep the Vikings comfortably ahead of the City University of New York Athletic Conference foe.  Junior Justin Stokes (Buffalo, NY/Middle Early College) finished with four points, five rebounds and three steals.

Terrhon Vaughn led York with 17 points.

The win helps set up a matchup with host Buffalo State College in the Championship Game on Saturday evening at 6 p.m.  It is a rematch of last season's first round game between the Vikings and Bengals, a matchup the home team won 100-91.
