ANN ARBOR, MI - The Villa Maria College Vikings had six players in double-figures but were unable to secure a season-opening victory as they fell to the Marygrove College Mustangs 102-91 on Saturday evening.
Villa (0-1, 0-0) was led by junior
Justin Stokes (Buffalo, NY/Middle Early College)Â who scored 17 off the bench on 8-of-13 shooting. Sophomore
Dominic Douglas (Bainbridge, GA/Bainbridge) scored 14 points on just seven shots. Â He also pulled down six rebounds and came up with six steals.Â
The Vikings outscored the Mustangs 61-51 in the second half and shot 52.4 percent for the game.  Marygrove (1-1, 0-0) shot nearly the same field goal percentage (52.3%) but made eight threes compared to just three for Villa.
Sophomore
DeJaun Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) scored 13 points for Villa while freshman
Gerald Bibbs (Buffalo, NY/Oracle) had 12. Â Freshman
Eric Waters (Buffalo, NY/Oracle) and
Julius Allen (Buffalo, NY/Oracle) each netted 11 in their debuts. Â Allen provided the needed spark to get the Vikings back in the game in the second half.
Nate Taylor led the way for Marygrove with a double-double, scoring 27 points and securing 13 rebounds. Â
