Lady Vikings Fall Late to Marygrove in Season Opener

Kincannon's 25 not enough as Marygrove edges out Villa

ANN ARBOR, MI - The Villa Maria College Lady Vikings opened up their 2016-17 campaign in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but fell 88-84 on Saturday to Marygrove College on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Concordia University.

Villa senior Jayvonna Kincannon (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community College) scored a game-high 25 points on just 13 shots and dished out seven assists.  Freshman Armoni Jordan (Lockport, NY/South Park) scored 23 points in her Viking debut, hitting on 9-of-17 shots.  She finished with a double-double, pulling down 11 rebounds while also recording six assists.

The Lady Vikings (0-1, 0-0) shot 45.3 percent for the game and held Marygrove (1-0, 0-0) to just 36.7 percent from the floor but it was 10 triples from the Mustangs that was the difference.  Marygrove shot 38 times from beyond the arc as to just 16 for Villa.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early 10--3 lead but the Lady Vikings quickly responded with a 10-1 run to gain a two-point edge.  They finished the quarter up 19-15 but the Mustangs came out and slowly chipped away and gained an eight-point 43-35 edge at the break thanks in part to a 7-0 run to close the half.

Marygrove extended it's lead to as many as 13 in the early stages of the third quarter but Villa cutting it to five, 62-57, by the end of the third quarter.  Freshman Nina Cray (Wheatland, IA/Calamus-Wheatland) opened the quarter with a bucket and Jordan followed with one of her own before Cray once again scored to cut the deficit to one, 64-63.  Cray finished with nine points and seven rebounds off the bench.

But that's the closest Villa would get.  Marygrove connected on three consecutive triples and the lead was quickly back to 10.  Villa did not quit however, managing to get with two with five seconds remaining but couldn't secure the much needed steal.  The Mustangs had six played score in double-figures with both Tris'styn Williams and Elisha Major each netting 17.

Villa sophomore Shaquana Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.  She also had six assists.  Junior newcomer Dominique Davis (Buffalo, NY/Genesee Community College) scored eight points and nine rebounds in her debut.  Freshman Leah McQuiller (Lackawanna, NY/Mount Mercy) scored seven points, connecting on all three of her shots.
