Vikings' Valiant Effort Falls Short at Genesee

Late call dooms Vikings' last second chances

BATAVIA, NY - A short-handed Villa Maria Vikings team gave it all they had against Genesee Community College, but a late foul call was too much to overcome as they dropped a road contest to the Cougars 88-81 on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore Justin Stokes (Buffalo, NY/Middle Early College) led a group of five Viking players in double-figures, with 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting.  Junior guard Andre Diggs (Bronx, NY/Erie Community) chipped in 16 but it wasn't enough as the Cougars escaped with the victory.

Stokes had a chance to tie the game for Villa when he made a driving layup while getting fouled.  Stokes however, missed the free throw.  But with 31 seconds left, it was still enough time for the Vikings to get the ball back down just one possession, but that changed when the official whistled the Vikings for an intentional foul, giving the Cougars two free throws and the ball.  Freshman DeJaun Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) was the one called for the very questionable whistle, taking the game completely out of the the Vikings' hands.

Stokes added four rebounds, and a game-high two blocks while Diggs had six rebounds and two assists.  Freshman Craig Page (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds in 24 minutes.  Jayson Moore (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) finished with his second double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 assists to go along with 6 rebounds.  Junior Kirby Driscoll finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds in 30 minutes.

Terrence Brown led Genesee with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  The Cougars improve to 6-1 on the season while the Vikings fall to 4-11.  Villa plays one more road game on Saturday against the University of Pittsburgh-Titusville at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Sheridan College on Dec. 21.
