JAMESTOWN, NY - The Villa Maria Lady Vikings women's basketball team captured it's first ever tournament championship on Saturday when the team defeated Westmoreland County Community College 86-52 to win the Tom D'Angelo Memorial Tournament Championship hosted by Jamestown Community College.
Senior guard
Magan Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) was named Tournament Most Valuable Player while junior
Tia Onipede (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Â Campbell scored a game-high 24 points against Westmoreland while Onipede averaged 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the floor in two tournament games.
The Lady Vikings took down Westmoreland behind 50 percent shooting while out-rebounding the Wolfpack 54-37. Â To go along with Campbell's 24 points, freshman
Shaquana Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) secured her fifth double-double of the season. Â She finished with 12 points and 18 rebounds. Â Freshman
Naomi Walker (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) had 9 points and 10 rebounds. Â Junior guard
Jayvonna Kincannon (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) added 18 points for Villa and both
Lajanai Thomas (Kenosha, WI/Burgard) and
Aaliyah Fulton (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) scored six points apiece.
Villa improves to 8-2 with the win and will next play on Wednesday, December 9 when they travel to take on Genesee Community College. Â Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
