JAMESTOWN, NY - Tia Onipede (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) had a career night, scoring a season-best 22 points and recording her first double-double, leading the Villa Maria Lady Vikings to a 62-58 victory over Jamestown Community College in the opening game of the Tom D'Angleo Memorial Tournament, Friday evening.
The junior guard was 10-of-19 from the floor and recorded 6 of her 11 rebounds on the offensive glass. Â She also added two assists and two steals as the Lady Vikings overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to improve to 7-2 on the season.
Jamestown outscored the Lady Vikings 12-10 in the first quarter, and then 18-13 in the second quarter as Villa shot just 21 percent in the first half. Â But they were able to turn up the pressure in the third quarter and forced seven turnovers and erased the deficit, tying the game at 45 entering the final quarter.
Onipede scored 6 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter including two consecutive baseline jump shots from the same spot on the floor to give Villa a 59-56 lead with 3:02 left. Â Freshman
Shaquana Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) then connected on a baseline runner to give Villa a five-point edge with 1:47 left.
After Jamestown got within three again after two made free throws, senior guard
Magan Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community), who finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds, sealed the game with a free throw to make it a two possession game with 11 seconds left.
Owens recorded her sixth double-double of the season, but did so this time with points and steals. Â The freshman finished with 12 points and 10 steals. Â She also added seven rebounds and five assists. Â Junior
Jayvonna Kincannon (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) chipped in eight points as well for Villa.
Villa will play in the tournament championship against either Central Pennsylvania College or Westmoreland Community College at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Â It marks the second consecutive weekend that the Lady Vikings will play in a tournament championship game after they were in the finals of the Thunderwolves Classic a week ago at Niagara County Community College.
