Campbell Strikes Gold in Lady Vikings Victory

27 points from the senior leads Villa into Championship game

SANBORN, NY - Villa Maria senior guard Magan Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) was firing on all cylinders, tying a season-best with 27 points en route to a 67-62 victory over Macomb Community College (MI) on Saturday to advance to the championship game of the Thunderwolves Classic, hosted by Niagara County Community College.  The Lady Vikings improved to 6-1 on the year, and will take on the Thunderwolves on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Campbell was 12-of-19 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.  She also added six steals, five rebounds, and four assists while playing all 40 minutes.

Macomb led just twice in opening minutes and never again over the final 35.  She scored four of the Vikings 10 points in the opening period, and 11 of the 19 points in the second period.

The Lady Vikings led by as many as eight in the second period and held that lead throughout the third quarter before Macomb was able to get within one, 47-46 with 6:33 left in the game.  Nine seconds after Macomb scored the bucket to get within one, junior Tia Onipede (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) knocked down a jumper which was then followed by a three-pointer from freshman Shaquana Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry).  That got the lead up to six, but Macomb again answered.

Markela Snipes and Leah Charrette both connected on triples on Macomb's next two possessions as they were able to tie the game at 52 with 4:52 left.  It was at that point, where Villa began a 12-0 run to put the game away.

Owens began the run with a three, and then hit a jumper just outside the paint on the next possession.  Junior Jayvonna Kincannon (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) then hit two free throws before Owens once again put home two more points.  Campbell then completed the run with a trey.

Macomb rattled off the next 10 points but Kincannon put the game away with the final three points.  Owens finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Kincannon scored 11 and had 6 assists.  Freshman Naomi Walker (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) pulled down 11 rebounds.
