BUFFALO, NY - Freshman
Shaquana Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) recorded her second consecutive double-double as the Villa Lady Vikings handled SUNY Delhi 72-45 in each team's second game of the Hart Hotels Tip Off Classic on Saturday, October 31st at the Villa Athletic Center.
Owens finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds while also adding 7 steals and 3 blocks. Her stuffed stat sheet comes a day after she recorded 14 points, 11 rebounds, 6 steals, 5 assists, and 2 blocks in a 76-31 win over Central Pennsylvania College. She did a lot of her damage in the second half where she scored 12 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.
The Lady Vikings improve to 2-0 on the season while the Broncos fall to 0-2.
Junior
Magan Campbell (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) had another nice performance and for the second consecutive day, was the game's leading scorer. She netted 18 points and added 7 assists and 6 rebounds.
Tia Onipede (Buffalo, NY/Erie Community) scored 17 and
Jayvonna Kincannon (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) scored 11 for Villa. Combined the two juniors added 14 rebounds and 7 steals.
The Lady Vikings started slow, falling behind 12-6 with 4:49 left in the first quarter. Villa answered that with an 11-2 run to lead 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. Onipede started the run with a fast-break layup. Campbell followed with a jumper. Onipede tied the game with two free throws on the next possession before Owens broke the tie with a three pointer from the corner after Kincannon came up with a steal. Freshman
Aaliyah Fulton (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry) closed the quarter with a jumper of her own.
Delhi opened the second quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 21-19 lead. Owens ended the run and tied the game with a jumper off an assist from Campbell. Delhi never led again as Villa ended the half on a 22-6 run.
Villa outscored Delhi 31-18 in the second half to extend the lead and play a pressure-free fourth quarter.
Brittany Toliver was the only Bronco in double-figures with 11 points. Ebony Carter secured 10 rebounds.
After forcing 44 turnovers against Central Penn, the Lady Vikings forced 39 Delhi turnovers. They turned those 39 turnovers into 32 points. Villa also secured 19 rebounds. They finished with nine second chance points.
