Devon Camel, a D'Youville University 2020 graduate, has joined Coach Randall and the Villa Maria College Athletics program as the Athletic Operations Coordinator and Men's Basketball Assistant Coach. Camel joins the Vikings after five years as a student-athlete and Men's Basketball Coach at D'Youville University.
“We are extremely excited to add Coach Camel to our program. Whenever you can add someone who is as hungry and passionate not only about basketball, but about teaching and guiding young men in life, you have to capitalize on that opportunity. Coach Camel brings youth, energy and ambition to our basketball program as well as our athletic department. He also brings a ton of basketball knowledge and experience to our staff. Most importantly I believe he shares the same vision for our program as I do, and he is willing to put in the hard work and dedication to see that vision come to fruition. He is a great fit for our program and culture. We couldn't be happier to have him hear at Villa and welcome him to the Viking family.”
Camel spent two years as a player at Medaille College before transferring to D'Youville University. Camel was no stranger to the postseason during his playing career, reaching the playoffs three of his four years. Camel assisted Medaille in winning the Regular Season Championship, the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship, and a berth in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Camel then transferred to D'Youville University, where he appeared in 50 games, 25 of which he started. Camel helped D'Youville reach the AMCC Tournament for the first time since 2014-15 during his senior year at D'Youville (2018-19). Camel finished his senior year strong, earning the Most Improved Player Award after doubling his points per game, rebounds per game, and assists per game totals in one season.
Camel's coaching experience dates back to 2019, when he took over as head coach of the Buffalo Titans AAU 12U team. He joined the D'Youville University staff in 2019 as the Director of Basketball Operations under Earl Schunk. Camel was promoted to Assistant Coach as well as Director of Scouting after only a few months as the Director of Basketball Operations. During this time, Camel worked tirelessly to help D'Youville Athletics transition from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II. Camel also coaches for the Corey Graham Elite 16U-17U AAU Team.
Camel has participated in several youth basketball camps in addition to coaching. In 2015 and 2016, he worked at the Christian Laettner and Medaille Basketball Camps, and in 2018 and 2019, he worked at the D'Youville University Youth Basketball Camps.
