Flag Football Posts Season-High Point Total in Victory on Senior Day

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's flag football team put up a season-high 66 points against Daemen University in a non-conference win on Sunday, April 26, on Senior Day in the matinee contest at Williamsville South High School.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Keiliany Diaz opened the scoring for a 7-0 lead with a first-quarter TD reception.
  • Alannah Bushorr hauled in a reception for a 13-0 Villa lead.
  • Scarlett Melancon capped the first-quarter scoring with a punt return for a 19-0 Viking lead.
  • Daemen got its lone score in the second quarter on a passing play for a 19-6 score.
  • Angelina Green's TD reception improved Villa's lead to 26-6.
  • Kiara Mercado wrapped up the first-half scoring with two interception returns for a 40-6 Viking advantage.
  • Lily Runkel opened the second-half scoring with a reception for a 46-6 Viking lead.
  • Layla Gallant scored on back-to-back TD receptions with catches in the third and fourth quarters for a 60-6 Villa lead.
  • Morgyn Mersdorf capped the game's scoring with a reception from Green for the 66-6 final.
  • Brianna Shalinsky and Bushorr each tossed three TD's as Villa finished with seven throwing scores.
  • The Viking defense finished with five tackles-for-loss, five breakups, four interceptions and three sacks.
  • Mercado finished with a pair of pick-6's, while other interceptions came from Runkel and Mersdorf.
  • Mercado led the defense with five stops, followed by four each from Nicolina Guerierro and Angelina Budelewski.
  • Seniors Zilkia Figueroa, Mercado and Alyssa Saavedra were honored on the day.
  • The victory gave Villa 19 wins on the season, surpassing last year's total of 18.
