DIX HILLS, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team finished their long road trip with a matchup against Five Towns College. The team came away successful with an impressive 102-62 win over the Sound. The Vikings were strong on offense with six players scoring double digits and three who recorded double-doubles. With the win the team now holds a record of 13-8 and barring any additions to the schedule they have secured a winning regular season.
The two teams were back and forth in the opening minutes but points by Autumn Adams-Edwards and
Danyea Barclay elevated the lead to six points. Five Towns stayed in the game and continuously fought back and after the first ten minutes of play, Villa led 27-21. The two teams continued to battle but as halftime got closer, the Vikings began to pull away. The lead grew to ten points with 2:25 to play after a Barclay jump shot. In the final minute,
Jordon Wright and
Maria Falanga combined to make three free-throws to give the unit a 47-33 lead going into halftime.
Villa kept the momentum going coming out of the break, with Barclay hitting two jumpers and
Leah McQuiller scoring a bucket to push the lead to 19 points. With five minutes to play in the quarter, Wright knocked down back-to-back threes to put the Vikings up 64-40. The largest lead of the frame was with 1:21 to go when
Maria Falanga made a free-throw to go up by 32 and at the end of the quarter Villa was up 76-48. The Vikings remained consistent in the final quarter of the game and were victorious 102-62.
Barclay was excellent scoring 25 points, collecting 13 rebounds and swatting away four blocks. She shot 11-for-17 from the field.
Chmicka Kennedy had the second highest total of the game with 23 points, four rebounds and was strong on defense with seven steals. Falanga also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, it went along with five assists and four steals. Wright was the third player with a double-double, with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Up next for the Vikings is a home game against Bryant and Stratton Syracuse on Wednesday, February 9. The team will celebrate Senior Night with a tip-off at 6 p.m.
