BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team played two games over the weekend and walked away with a 1-1 split. The weekend started with a home opener against Beaver County Community College, which saw the Vikings dominate with a 94-54 win. The Saturday matchup was a road game against Penn State Greater Allegheny and it saw a much different result, with Villa being handed a 104-75 loss. The weekend results see the Vikings hold a 3-2 record.

Beaver County Titans

Villa jumped out to 18-7 lead after the first quarter against the Titans and continued that momentum in the second frame and walked into half-time with a 47-21 advantage. The third quarter was a close matchup with the Vikings outscoring the opposition by one point, but they put the game away in the fourth quarter and took the win 94-54. Danyea Barclay was dominant with 13 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Five other Vikings scored in double figures, starting with the leading scorer, Autumn Adams-Edwards who tallied 21 points and recorded six steals. Leah McQuiller was also happy to steal the ball, collecting seven to go along with 17 points and four rebounds. Chmicka Kennedy scored 13 points of her own, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists. Shaunessy Bennet and Cortinea Smith ended the day with 11 and ten points respectively.

Greater Allegheny

Vikings once again came out of the gate firing against Greater Allegheny, scoring 32 points in the first quarter and obtaining a lead of 14 points. Maria Falgana caught fire, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Penn State chipped back into the game, outscoring the Vikings 24-19, but Villa still held a 51-42 advantage going into half-time. The third frame was a completely different story, as Greater Allegheny shot 78 percent from the field and the Viking lead shifted to a deficit of 11 going into the final quarter. Villa battled foul trouble and were unable to get into an offensive groove and fell by a final score of 104-75

Five players finished with double-figure scoring, starting with Adams-Edwards, who had 15 points. Falgana and Barclay both ended the game with 12 points, while Smith contributed 13 and Kennedy collected ten.

Villa will have a week to prepare for their next game, when they compete in the Bobcats Bash on Saturday, November 13 against Vermont Tech.
