Women’s Basketball Aim For Eighth Straight Victory

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team have been impressive all season. They will play their ninth home game of the year as they host Bryant and Stratton-Albany on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Vikings have a record of 12-1 and currently sit in a tie for no. 1 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association coaches' poll. 
 
Last Time Out: The Vikings cruised by Bryant and Stratton-Ohio on Monday, Jan. 6, winning by a score of 85-49. The team recorded 22 steals and forced 30 turnovers, which Villa turned into 35 points. All five starters scored in the double-digits and it was led by Ta Lia Burgess who knocked down 19 points. Dakaylah Winfield and Tekia Gary contributed 17 points each, while Bianca Brown and Jordon Wright scored 14 and 10 points respectively. 
 
Home Court Advantage: Villa is undefeated when playing at home, holding a record of 8-0. They average 82 points per game at the Athletic Center including game totals of 95 and 92. Their largest win was on Monday when they defeated the Bobcats by 36, but early in the year, they beat Genesee Community College 86-54 for one of their largest wins of the season. 
 
Scoring Options: The Vikings have four players averaging double digit scoring on the season. Winfield leads the group with an average of 15.4 points per game and is followed by Norvonee Hall with a 12.2 average, Brown who averages 11.6 points and Burgess who tallies 10.2 points. In addition, Gary and Wright average 7.9 and 7.5 points per game respectively and offer even more depth. 
 
Previous Matchup: On Dec. 17, Villa traveled to the Bobcats and walked away with a 64-56 win. The Vikings outscored the opposition 21-6 in the second quarter and went into half-time with a 38-22 advantage and that proved to be the difference. Hall recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Brown was fantastic off of the bench with 13 points and seven rebounds. 
 
Looking Ahead: Villa will hit the road on Saturday, Jan. 18 as they head to Bryant and Stratton-Syracuse for a 5 p.m. game. A few days later the team will return home to host the Bobcats at 4 p.m.
