Vikings Continue Win Streak Against Wildcats

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team rolled along to their third straight victory on Friday as they defeated Johnson and Wales University by a final of 92-83. The Vikings now hold a record of 8-1 on the year, while the Wildcats fall under .500 with a 4-5 mark on the season.

The teams traded scores for most of the first quarter. Villa grabbed the first lead with opening layups by Tekia Gary and Estella Anderson. The Wildcats came back and tied the score up at 6-6. The team reclaimed the lead at the 3:15 mark with a Dakaylah Winfield three-pointer and then with 54 seconds left, Taliah Bush converted a layup to take the lead. After one quarter of play, the Vikings were down 20-19. Bianca Brown kicked off the next frame with a layup and it kicked off a nice run for the team. Norvonee Hall, Gary and Winfield made three shots from behind the arc and they quickly grabbed an eight-point advantage. The Vikings never lost the lead and after the first half they were up 49-38.

Both units came out trading buckets, but Jordon Wright ignited a run after a fast break jump shot pushed the score to 58-46. Winfield followed with a three before Bush converted a layup and Wright hit a three of her own to extend the lead to 20. With consistent pressure, Villa was able to remain ahead 74-56 after three quarters of play. The final frame saw a tremendous push by the Wildcats as they outscored the Vikings 27-18, but it was not enough as the home team was able to walk away with a 92-83 win.

Winfield was the orchestrator as the tallied 20 points in 37 minutes of play and dished out seven assists. Gary was an efficient 3-for-4 from behind the arc as she totaled 15 points. Bush was a key piece off the bench, contributing a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds. Wright continues to be a swiss-army knife for Villa, recording ten points, eight assists and three rebounds.

The Women's basketball team is back in actions on Saturday, Dec. 14 as they host Bryant and Stratton – Rochester at 12 p.m.
