BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria Vikings women's basketball team got back in the win column on Monday, as they defeated Genesee Community College 86-54. The Vikings used a wide range of methods to score their points, as they recorded 29 points off of turnovers, 46 bench points and 66 points in the paint. The win shifts the Villa record to 6-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 3-6.
Norvonee Hall gave the team an early lead with back-to-back layups in the first minute and a half of the game. The Cougars made a comeback and grabbed their first lead of the game, but
Estella Anderson responded to a game tying layup.
Dakaylah Winfield hit a three-pointer at the 1:44 mark before Anderson knocked down two more layups to give the team a lead they did not surrender. Villa began to push their lead thanks to a Winfield three that made the score 23-14, and then
Jordon Wright gave them a double-digit advantage with a layup with just under four minutes to play. By the time the half-time horn sounded, the Vikings had grabbed a 44-24 lead against the Cougars.
Hall jump started the second half with three straight layups. GCC began to make a comeback with a 7-0 run, but Villa continued to pound the ball down low thanks to strong place from Anderson in the post.
Ta Lia Burgess and Winfield each added layups during the quarter to hold back and oppositional advances, and going into the final frame of the game, the Vikings maintained a 60-41 lead. The fourth quarter saw much of the same as Anderson continued to use her post-moves to convert layups.
Precious Adamson joined the scoring with six points in the quarter, including back-to-back to push the lead to 30 at the end. When the final horn sounded, Villa had earned the 86-54 victory.
Anderson led the way with 24 points on 11-for-18 shooting, while also grabbing nine rebounds. Hall finished the day with 19 points and collected seven rebounds. Winfield helped lead the offense with five assists to go with her 18 points. She shot 4-for-7 from behind the arc and also brought in five rebounds. Wright did it all for Villa as she score eight points, but had nine rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Villa will have a highly anticipated rematch against Bryant and Stratton- Buffalo on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The team lost their previous game against the Bobcats in the championship game of the Betty Abgott Invitational, 80-78. The matchup is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start time.
