BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Villa Maria College women's basketball team collected their second straight victory on Saturday, when they defeated Penn State Beaver, 80-76. With the win, the Vikings move to 2-0 on the year, while the Lions drop to 0-1.
Villa was down 3-0 to start the game, but layups by
Dakaylah Winfield and
Tekia Gary quickly brought them back before
Bianca Brown nailed a three-pointer to take a 7-5 lead. As the first quarter went on, Villa stretched out its advantage after a three by Winfield and buckets by
Ta Lia Burgess and Gary brought the score to 19-12 in favor of the home team. After the first ten minutes of play, the Vikings held a 25-17 lead. During the second quarter, the advantage hit double digits multiple times after scores by
Norvonee Hall,
Taliah Bush and

Coming out of half time, Villa continued to cruise as they did not allow the gap to drop below nine points. Gary, Hall, and Burgess all score multiple buckets to keep any opposition push at bay. After three quarters, the score was 58-49. Towards the end of the fourth quarter, the Lions attempted to mount a comeback, cutting their deficit to four points down the stretch, but a pair of Winfield free-throw makes with eight second on the clock helped ice the game. As the final horn sounded, the Vikings had secured their second win of the season.
Hall was a key player as she scored 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting, while also grabbing 13 rebounds. Burgess was the second highest scorer, collected 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting, while coming off the bench. Brown, Winfield and Gary all tallied double digits in scoring, going 12, 11 and 10 respectively.
The games continue on Monday, Nov. 11 when the Vikings travel to Carlow University for a 5 p.m. road battle.
